What is Geopathic Stress?
As the Earth heals, so do its people.
“The term Geopathic Stress is used to describe negative energies, also known as ‘harmful earth rays’, which emanate from the earth and cause discomfort and ill health to those living in that area. Earth energies can be bad, good or neutral. The word “ geopathic” is derived from the Greek words, “Geo’ meaning ‘the Earth’, and “pathos” meaning ‘disease’ or ‘suffering’, so literally ‘suffering of the Earth’.
“Geopathic stress is a distorted electromagnetic field of the Earth (Schumann Resonance). The Earth [when not geopathically stressed] resonates with an electromagnetic frequency of approximately 7.83 Hz – Schumann resonances (SR), which falls within the range of (alpha) human brainwaves. Underground streams, sewers, water pipes, electricity, tunnels and underground railways, mineral formations and geological faults distort the natural resonance of the Earth thus creating geopathic stress.”

As it turns out, both the Earth and all life on this planet (including humanity) were created at an ideal electromagnetic frequency of 7.83 Hz – at the Schumann Resonance. When this field is disturbed or distorted for either the Earth herself or any of her life forms, a change of frequency in one, necessarily affects the other.
The difference between non-living matter as energy and living matter as energy, is the interaction of the atomic energy of matter with the Life Force energy, igniting a whole that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Due to the multidimensional aspect of human life at the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels, the flow of these energies throughout our being can relatively easily be thrown out of balance, interrupted or even blocked. Because everything is holographic, a microcosm within a macrocosm, the Gaia philosophy [1] is that the Earth is a living organism just like we are. As a living, breathing organism, the Earth, as inanimate as it may seem, is also an energetic being, with an energy flow and an energy field that can change, over time, for a variety of reasons.
The Earth, like all living organisms, has a life cycle and a life span as does all life. As an integral part of our own macrocosm, we can even see ourselves as organisms or cells that make up a larger organism – the Earth. Just as our bodies each have thousands of cells that die off every day, the “human” cells of the Earth die off every day, reinforcing the cyclical and interconnected nature of all Life. If we take this a step further, considering the premise that all of Life is not only connected, but one organism, then we can build upon that premise by proposing that the quality of every thought, belief and perception created by individual humans every moment of every day, must also impact the quality of every part of the whole. This necessarily includes the quality of each of the elements that make up the Earth, and thus, the Earth itself.
Therefore, if the energy of any individual cell, whether it be a cell of a microscopic organism or a human cell, can be thrown out of balance and brought to a state of dis-ease, then the energy of the Earth can also be thrown out of balance and brought into dis-ease. Just as humans have lines of energy flowing through us in certain pathways or meridians, so the Earth has lines of energy flowing through her, called ley lines, that can also be disrupted. When this happens, this disruption of the Earth’s energies is referred to as geopathic stress.

Christan Hummel, who has been working as a geomancer for thirty-five years, explains geopathic stress in the following way:
“…these geopathic lines are the accumulation of humanity’s emotional and mental residue that has been absorbed by the land. Our psychic garbage so to speak that has collected into rivers or currents of energy. It came from such things as emotional energy from battles in the area that the land absorbed…these rivers are then drawn to those areas that are the natural flow patterns in the Earth…” [2]

Health Impacts of Geopathic Stress
Two cancer specialists in Germany did a combined study of over five thousand cancer patients and found that in ninety-eight percent of the cases, the exact location of the cancer in each patient’s body could be traced to intersecting lines of geopathic stress crossing over their beds!
Another study conducted in Austria studied three thousand children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Simply by moving the children’s beds away from the zone of geopathic stress, every single case showed marked reduction in ADD behavior.
Medical researchers at Dulwich Health Society in London, England did a study of over twenty-five thousand ill people to determine whether there was a marked correlation between geopathic stress and their illnesses. The results of this study are almost stupefying, with one hundred percent of people experiencing a recurrence of cancer exposed to areas of geopathic stress, and ninety-five percent of the people with cancer were either sleeping or working in a geopathically stressed area. The same research project linked geopathic stress to an unusually high percentage (seventy to eighty percent) of a number of other disorders, diseases, and conditions such as: ADD, ADHD and essentially all learning, behavioral and hyperactive disorders in children, crib death, infertility, allergies, divorce, domestic violence and abuse, depression and suicide, insomnia, high blood pressure and other circulatory and heart related problems, AIDS, MS, all nervous system disorders, resistance to treatment, and Mad Cow Disease.
Research has shown that many of the diseases and conditions listed here are diseases and conditions of location due to geopathic stress in that location. Insurance companies in England, recognizing the significance of this and other studies, rank geopathic stress above smoking and alcoholism when quoting life insurance rates. Furthermore, many European insurance companies will not insure homes or property until they have been assessed for geopathic stress.
Is there a solution?
So now that we understand what geopathic stress is and how to detect it, is there anything that we can do about it? Just as energy imbalances in the body can be corrected through energetic modalities like acupuncture, Reiki, Polarity Therapy, Healing Touch, shamanic journeying, visualization techniques and a number of other complementary energy-based healing modalities, so can these imbalances in the Earth be healed as well.
Although the technique may vary and look different in individual healing sessions, the intention and attention for the work is exactly the same. The intention and focus is always to bring the living being, whether animal, plant, human, or earth back into alignment with its prior perfection. Every living being has a blueprint for this state of prior perfection and the work of energetic clearing/aligning, human or otherwise, should always have the restoration of this blueprint as its primary intention.
